Evaluation of the protective role of antioxidants: α-tocopherol, vitamin C, and quercetin, against ibuprofen-induced renal damage in male Wistar rats

Background: Ibuprofen, commonly used in management of pains and inflammatory conditions, has been associated with renal damage. The protective role antioxidants against Ibuprofen-induced damage wistar rats were investigated this study. Methods: study was designed two parts; first, to induce kidney secondly, determine ibuprofen-induced injury. In the first phase, groups animals used; one group treated 120mg/kg ibuprofen daily for 14 days, while other served as control had distilled water. Serum malondialdehyde parameters estimated after treatment kidneys harvested histology. protection study, divided into five groups, 1-4 having three sub-groups Ibuprofen graded doses vitamin E, C quercetin respectively, control. After 14days, antioxidant enzymes estimated, Results: Showed significant (p<0.05) increase malondialdehyde, urea, creatinine, uric-acid levels administration. Conversely, there reduction co-administration ibuprofen, enzymes. Estimated antioxidant’s percentage showed E gave highest on amongst others. Histology revealed atrophied glomeruli widened capsular space, desquamated tubular epithelial cells infiltrating lymphocytes administration, but normal histo-architecture antioxidants. Conclusion: Antioxidants such α-tocopherol, C, quercetin, protected Wistar rats.
